About the Author

Seen as an old place-holder, Angelo Roncalli was elected pope as a compromise between two factions until someone else might be eligible. He was expected to die in a few years and did. But first, he ushered in the Second Vatican Council, revolutionizing the Church and bringing it into the modern world.
